What is the Georgia Accounting Food Fight?
The Georgia Society of CPAs and accounting firms and industry accounting departments across the Peach State are working together in a friendly food and fund drive competition to support the eight regional Georgia Food Banks that comprise the Georgia Food Bank Association. Our firm has entered the competition, with our collection benefiting the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia. This wonderful organization distributes food via local agencies throughout 14 counties in northeast Georgia. Last year, Georgia accounting firms and accounting departments collectively donated over 11,000 pounds of food and more than $100,000. This year, the Georgia Society of CPAs has even higher goals: 12,500 pounds of food and $110,000.
Why are accountants tackling the hunger issue in Georgia?
The simple truth is, so many in our great state are going hungry, with children being hit especially hard. One in four Georgia children (28%) are food insecure, which equates to approximately 700,000 children under the age of 18 not knowing when their next meal might come. In addition, one in 10 Georgia seniors live in poverty, often resulting in food insecurity among this vulnerable population as well. We want to help the communities in which we serve by giving back, and this competition is a fun, friendly way to generate food and financial donations for food banks during what is traditionally a slow time for food donations.
